Suggested research and development programs for gas and vapor respirators.

Research and development plans identified for NIOSH are summarized and include those pertinent to test procedures, protective equipment development programs, field study programs as well as other programs, and a priority listing of the projects is given. Recommendations for respiratory testing procedures pertain to wearing compatibility, exhalation valve testing, acceptable breathing resistance for air purifying respirators, revision of the list of certified respirators, modification of procedures, supplied air certification, leakage test device for fitting of respirators, and sorbents for gases and vapors other than organic vapors. protective equipment development projects include sorbent life indicators for air purifying respirators, comfort requirements for respirator facepieces, and prototype supplied air suit. Field study projects include a minimum acceptable industrial respiratory program, testing under actual conditions in industry, alternatives for respiratory program improvement, etc.
