Abstract
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was established in 1971 within the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. NIOSH is engaged primarily in research, manpower development, and technical assistance activities. It performs its work under two Federal laws: the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.
