Alumina monohydrate is produced by treating aluminum nitrate solutions at a temperature of about 250 deg c to 350 deg c and a pressure of about 500 to 2,500 psig. For example, a charge of 150 g of al(no3)3.9H2o and 300 g h2o was put in an autoclave. The temperature was raised to 275 deg c and held at that value for 4h, an autogenous pressure of 950 psig being generated. After cooling, 16.9 G of precipitate was recovered and identified by x-ray diffraction as primarily y-alooh, representing 70 pct al recovery.
