Conversion of Municipal Refuse, Sludge, and Other Wastes to Heavy Oil and Bitumen.

Sewage sludge from the Chicago Sanitary District was heated to 250 deg. C in a 500-ml autoclave for 1 h at 1,500 psig of which co contributed 500 psig. Of the dry matter 24.5 Wt pct was converted to heavy oil having the following analysis: c 77.0, H 10.7, N 2.8 Wt pct. Refuse from the Altoona, Pennsylvania, waste treatment facility was heated at 380 deg. C for 20 min at 5,000 psig of which co contributed 1,500 psig; 8.7 G of oil was obtained from 42 g of dry solids. The oil had the following analysis: c 79.6, H 9.5, N 1.9, S 0.13, O 8.8 Wt pct.
