A method of extracting be from a fused salt electrolyte containing bef2 is described. The method comprises electrolyzing a fused bath consisting essentially of bef2 and a member from the group consisting of beo, lif, baf2, and mixtures thereof at a temperature below the melting point of be and then heating the mixture of fused salt and be to a temperature above the M.P. of be to coalesce the be. To separate the mixture of coalesced be and fused salts, the mixture is poured, while at a temperature below the M.P. of be but above the M.P. of the salt mixture, through a stainless steel screen. The be metal may be further purified by leaching with an hno3 solution. The process may be carried out in batch or semicontinuous manner. The residual be is suitable for use in space vehicles and nuclear reactors.
