A high-grade Y-Si master alloy free of O or C is prepared by mixing powdered Y2O3 with SiC in a molar ratio of 1:(2.5-3) and heating in a SiC, W, or graphite crucible under a dynamic vacuum of 0.01 Torr at 1,600 deg-2,000 deg c for 10-30 min to sinter the mixture. The C is removed as Co2 and CO by the vacuum pump. X-ray analysis indicates more YSi2 than YSi.
