Formation of Tourmaline-Rich Gem Pockets in Miarolitic Pegmatites.
Am Mineral 1986 71:396-405
This report compares fluid-inclusion data from pegmatites in San Diego, California, and Kulam, Afghanistan, to identify the conditions under which gem pockets form. Miarolitic and massive rare-element pegmatites were found to crystallize under similar pressure- temperature conditions (2400 to 2800 bars and 425 deg to 475 deg c), and may also be controlled by the activities of alkali borate melt components.
