The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop methods for mineral extraction that will allow domestic mining companies to remain competitive in world mineral markets into the 21st century. One of the technologies currently being evaluated is in situ, or in- place, extraction of copper from an oxide ore deposit. This paper summarizes the current status of the Santa Cruz in situ copper mining research project.
