Abstract
A monte carlo simulation model is presented for determining the optimum roof control system and design layout for underground room- and-pillar coal mines. Based on a database of roof falls, the program probabilistically simulates roof fall geometries and fall locations and determines the ultimate cost effectiveness of a support system. Lost production and subsequent cleanup costs due to roof falls resulting from inadequate support are weighed against costs associated with increased support to determine an optimum balance. Details of the simulation process are also discussed.
