This report presents the final results of a 3-year effort to develop a geotechnically oriented geographic information system (gis) on the Mississippi and Alabama gulf coast areas. Landsat thematic mapper (tm) data on the project area were acquired during the second year of the project efforts. The gis is based on two adjacent 1000 x 1000 pixel scenes extracted from that tm scene. The project area was classified on the basis of land cover on multispectral band ratios, air photo analysis, and topographic maps of the area. The classification process and the distribution of spectral brightness values are discussed. A soils map of the Mississippi portion of the project area has been digitized and incorporated in the gis. Bathymetric data on the Mississippi sound, derived from 7-1/2-minute topographic quadrangle maps, were completed during the final year of the project effort.
