Generalized Rayleigh Wave Propagation in Anisotropic Rock.

The surface waves in an anisotropic semi-infinite solid are examined analytically for the case of transverse isotropy. Closed-form expressions for group velocity (rate of energy propagation) of surface waves are presented when the elastic symmetry axis lies in the free surface plane of the half-space. These relations are evaluated for transversely isotropic yule marble and compared with experimental results obtained previously using transient point loading on a large yule marble block used to model a semi-infinite medium. The analysis and experiments assume that the direction of the axis of elastic symmetry does not vary in the media.
