Retorting indexes for oil-shale pyrolyses from ethylene-ethane ratios of product gases.

A number called retorting index is developed from the relationship of reciprocal temperature versus log [(ethylene)/(ethane)]. The retorting index has the units of temperature. Its magnitude depends on both temperature and residence time for the reactants in the heated zone in oil shale retorting.
