A processing system for waste plastics was developed at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, Rolla, Missouri. A community collection campaign netted an 800-pound sample of waste plastics for analysis and experimental treatment, and samples of wirestripping wastes were also studied. Separations by air classifier, hydraulic classifier, and other liquid-media methods are described. Thermal dissociation of polyvinyl chloride to recycle HCl and char is discussed. Fabrication experiments showed several possible product areas in which recycled plastics could be utilized. A hydraulic separator was developed capable of processing up to 50 pounds per hour of mixed plastics and based on standard methods used in mineral processing industries. Pure fractions of polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride were readily extracted from the mixed wastes with this laboratory separator.
