The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in association with conducting basic research in ground control, is involved in the assessment of roof rock quality in coal mines using commercially available software packages. This paper illustrates the usefulness of a type of computer software package that dramatically increases the speed of performing calculations, constructing tables, and finally interpreting results through statistical analysis. The application has allowed for easy reduction of the vast amount of data produced during analysis of rock strength, as well as for rock quality designation (rqd). Examples of both of these applications are presented in the paper, along with a statistical analysis of the results.
