An evaluation of a Porapak Q column at cryogenic temperatures for the separation of helium-3, neon, and hydrogen in helium-4.

An investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Porapak Q column for separating helium-3, neon, and hydrogen in helium-4. The column temperatures used for this study were 194 and 76 K. The results of this investigation were that helium-3, neon, and hydrogen are separated by using a 4.9 m × 0.47 cm, i.d., column filled with 80/100-mesh Porapak Q using a helium-4 carrier gas. Using the separation characteristics of this column material, a chromatographic analytical method was devised.
