Bureau of Mines studies indicate that two methods offer promise for recycling the metal values in junked automobiles. For urban centers that discard at least 40,000 cars per year, the preferred method is shredding. For areas that do not discard enough cars to support a shred plant, a combination of incineration, hand-tool dismantling, and baling can be profitably used. The Bureau's extensive investigations of recycling automotive scrap are described.
