Safety Design for Metal Tailings Dams.
Min Cong J 1973 Jan; 59(1):51-55
Mineral tailings can be used to build structurally safe tailings embankments. Recent technology has provided engineers with the "tools" needed to assess overall embankment stability. For example, one can predict the ultimate height to which the dam can be built and still remain safe. Complete control of surface and seepage water is the key requirement to building safe dams. In general, peripheral discharge building methods promote safe tailings ponds via good water control, and, in addition, aid in controlling environmentally detrimental water. Practical testing and instrumentation technology are available to monitor the safety of any embankment on a routine basis. Some thoughts relative to design requirements for final abandonment of the tailings pond are also presented.
