Abstract
Eleven examples of the type of research project conducted at the Morgantown Energy Research Center, Morgantown, West Virginia, are given. Nuclear applications in the coal industry include neutron thermalization to continuously monitor the moisture content of coal, beta and gamma backscatter to measure the explosive nature of mine dust, and neutron-gamma reactions used as a sulfur meter in the process control of coal cleaning methods. Other applications include tagging coal for flow measurements and level and density gaging for coal processes.
