Abstract
The Bureau of Mines is applying nuclear methods to monitor the coal bed level and combustion zone of a pilot-scale pressurized gas producer. Detection instruments measure the transmission of cobalt- 60 gamma rays through the 56-inch-diameter by 16-foot-high vessel and provide personnel with continuous operating information, including coal bed height, occurrence of voids, location of combustion zone, and accumulation of excessive ash. Smoother, more efficient operation of the producer has resulted in improved gas production.
