The Bureau of Mines research programs include studies to develop technically feasible, economic methods for treating solid wastes and secondary raw materials for recovering and recycling valuable metals and minerals. Significant tonnages of useful metals can be recovered which are often richer in metal content than ores presently being processed. An additional potential benefit is the alleviation of the stream and ground-water pollution to which these waste materials contribute.
