Carbon reduction of iron oxide waste materials to be reactive sponge iron in a fluidized-bed reactor.

Iron pellets of large surface areas were successfully produced from hematitic and magnetitic materials in a fluidized-bed reactor. Scaling up this process to commercial scale will be dependent upon improvement of the process so as to make it economically practicable. Research is underway to develop a more efficient externally heated reactor, lower the cost of forming the pellets, and design a continuous operation.
