Clay, a raw material for aluminum.

Three of the most attractive processes for producing alumina from clay are briefly described. Previously published Bureau of Mines estimated capital and operating costs for these processes--nitric acid, sulfurous acid-caustic purification, and hydrochloric acid- isopropyl ether extraction--are compared with costs for the Bayer process.
