Electrowinning oxygen from silicate rocks.

One phase of NASA-sponsored research for the utilization of extraterrestrial resources is directed toward determining the feasibility of extracting oxygen by electrolysis of simulated lunar materials. The method is based on a modification of existing techniques for electrowinning metals from their oxides in fused-salt systems. In this article, results of preliminary work leading to the electrowinning efforts are presented. The current research being conducted by the Bureau of Mines is outlined, and operating conditions under which oxygen was successfully electrowon from fluoride-silicate mixtures are described.
