Abstract
The factors that influence the design of slope walls in rock are listed, together with brief comments about the state of knowledge concerning each. Various slope design techniques are summarized. Some of the factors and a design technique have been investigated in a full-scale instrumented test of a slope wall around an open pit; in situ stresses and rock strength were low, and the displacements and strains in the wall rock changed as the slope was steepened. These measured changes were compared with computations based on elastic, continuum mechanics. The comparisons show good evidence that the pit wall reacted elastically to its change in slope.
