Abstract
The objectives, content, and organization of the mining research program of the Bureau of Mines are described with emphasis on some of the more fundamental aspects of the work. Some basic scientific studies now in progress related to the five primary elements of the mining system--(1) rock and earth disintegration, (2) ground control, (3) mine environment control, (4) materials handling, and (5) mineral deposit delineation--are discussed in terms of their contributions and potential contributions to the advancement of mining technology.
