Abstract
High-resolution mass spectrometric analyses of pyridine extracts from reduced and untreated coals support reasons advanced by reggel and co-workers for the increased solubility of reduced coals. High- resolution data on the reduced coal show evidence for (1) an increase in the volatile oxygenated compounds that may result from splitting of ether linkages in the coal, (2) a substantial reduction of sulfur in the coal, (3) the formation of smaller and more soluble coal units or 'molecules', and (4) the formation of hydroaromatic compounds.
