This report of the extraction of energy fuels panel has been prepared for the office of science and technology which has been engaged in directing an extensive assessment of new energy technologies. That assessment is being carried out in response to a request from the President in his clean energy message to Congress of June 4, 1971, and involves the participation of major federal agencies concerned with energy research. The purpose is to identify and implement the most promising set of research programs in the energy field. The technical assessment contained in this report is an initial appraisal of the following functional areas: (1) stimulation of petroleum and natural gas production, (2) production of oil from tar sands, (3) development of oil shale, (4) underground gasification of coal, (5) oil and gas production from organic wastes, and (6) primary extraction of coal. The report covers short- term needs (1972-80), intermediate-term needs (1975-85), and long-term needs (1980-2000).
