Test work on the production of foundry iron using automobile scrap has been conducted by the federal Bureau of Mines in an 18-inch 1- ton basic-lined cupola furnace using preheated air. A statistically designed experiment is being used to determine best operation for the cupola and to determine the effect of operating variables upon responses. Various forms of automobile scrap have been used, but emphasis has been on the use of the heavy-melting scrap by-product from the Bureau's rotary kiln test program.
