A technique was devised for measuring the rate of chemical reaction between titanium or titanium alloys and molten-salt mixtures containing titanium lower chlorides. The kinetics of the reaction of titanium, titanium-oxygen alloy, and titanium-iron alloy in molten salts were determined to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in the preparation of titanium by metal reduction or electrolytic processes. The rates of the heterogeneous reactions were measured as a function of titanium content of the molten salts and of the oxygen and iron content of the titanium alloys.
