Abstract
Deterministic and stochastic simulation were combined to develop a computer model of an open pit mining system using bucket wheel excavators and related materials-handling equipment. The model is closed and dynamic in the sense that information is fed back to control activities at various levels and reservoirs. The results of interaction between unit operations in one time interval determine overall system behavior for the next interval. Equipment- performance curves and system-profile characteristics rather than time studies are applied to determine the operation of each activity at any time period. For that part of the system where performance is dictated by a random variable, subjective probabilities are employed.
