Abstract
The output of a municipal incinerator consists basically of three components: atmospheric emissions, aqueous effluents, and solid residues. Of primary environmental concern are the atmospheric and aqueous emissions. A thorough study of the Alexandria, Virginia, incinerator effluents has been undertaken with many basic analytical skills being required in the process. This Bureau of Mines discussion is concerned principally with sampling, sample preparation, analytical methods, and data treatment.
