The use of ferric chloride to leach galena in a hydrometallurgical process is not a new concept nor is the electrolysis of lead chloride to produce lead. Over the past 50 years, several investigators have reported variations on these procedures, but none reached industrial acceptance for reasons that are probably both technical as well as economic. This paper describes research in progress by the Bureau of Mines to develop a nonsmelting process for producing lead.
