Copper Recovery from Chalcopyrite by a Roast-leach Procedure.

Sulfation roasting of chalcopyrite concentrates, followed by water or dilute acid leach, was investigated as an alternative to conventional smelting. Copper sulfation was found to be effectively promoted by the addition of materials such as fe2o3 to the furnace charge. Conversion of the copper to a soluble form was essentially complete after roasting the mixed charge at 400 deg. to 600 deg. C, using an fe2o3-to-chalcopyrite concentrate weight ratio of 1:2.
