Energy consumption in primary magnesium production.
Light Met Age 1977 Aug; 35(7/8):19-21
The consumption of energy for the production of magnesium metal from seawater, as reported in a contract study carried out for the Bureau of Mines by Battelle Columbus Laboratories, is discussed. Comparisons are made with a prior estimate for this process and for the related carbothermic and ferro-silicon processes, as well as with the energy consumption for the production of aluminum metal. Methods are suggested for reducing the overall energy use.
