Shortwall Mining At the Hendrix No. 22 Mine.
1st Symp on Ug Min NCA/BCR Coal Conf & Expo Louisville Kentucky 10/21-23/75 1:152-57
During the period from January 14, 1974, to April 23, 1975, two shortwall panels were developed and three shortwall panels were mined in a cooperative shortwall mining demonstration project at the Hendrix No. 22 Mine by the Bureau of Mines and the Beth-Elkhorn Corp. Production increased from 428 to 560 tons per shift during shortwall mining; development production was 482 and 523 tons per shift. From preliminary results, it appears that (1) the shortwall system is no less safe than room-and-pillar mining, (2) the recovery of coal is about 85 pct, (3) the consumption of supplies and materials is reduced significantly, and (4) overall average production of a shortwall unit is 10 pct higher than a comparable room-and-pillar unit.
