Abstract
A method is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering lead metal from galena without generation of so2. Galena concentrate is leached with ferric chloride solution to produce leach chloride, which in turn is converted to metal by electrolysis in a fused-salt bath. Chlorine, which is produced also during electrolysis, is absorbed in the spent leach solution to regenerate ferric chloride for recycling. Typical lead products contain less than 100 ppm total detectable metallic impurities.
