Environmental protection of surface areas near underground mining sites.

A Bureau of Mines program will conduct surveys and research projects to obtain factual data and to develop and demonstrate new or improved techniques that can be used to minimize the environmental effects of surface subsidence, acid mine drainage, and mine waste disposal. These are the major problems associated with coal extraction by underground methods.
