A smelting technique has been developed by the federal Bureau of Mines for treating ilmenite to produce a low-iron titanate product from which titania pigment can be obtained by the conventional sulfate process without the usual formation of byproduct ferrous sulfate. Ferrous sulfate has little industrial value and generally causes disposal problems.
