Abstract
Pilot plant work in a 1/4-ton basic oxygen furnace has shown that thermal energy can be recovered from the offgases to preheat the scrap charge. Recovered heat in the scrap can account for up to 44 pct of energy necessary to melt it and allows the scrap charge to be increased by 43 pct.
