This report describes initial tests of sodium-type heat pipes in a bench-scale fluid-bed gasifier to study the effects on the pipes of a hot corrosive and erosive environment. Construction and operation of the bench-scale unit are discussed along with heat pipe selection, pipe design, and results of initial tests of the pipes. Performance of the combustion and gasification sections is not covered.
