Satellite Monitoring of Open Pit Mining Operations.
NTIS: PB 206 626 :28 pages
Anticipating the availability of space-altitude imagery from the earth resource technology satellites (erts), the Bureau of Mines investigated the possibilities of using such imagery in its activities in solid waste disposal, reclamation of mine workings, and mineral resource inventory. The study indicates that monitoring open pit and strip-mining operations can be done using conventional techniques if the sharpness of the imagery is sufficiently high. Possibilities also exist for semi-automated processes for change detection. Additional experimentation is needed for multispectral discrimination and identification of mine-related phenomena.
