Reduction of Tetravalent Cerium and Its Application to Stripping from Tri-n-butyl Phosphate.

The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale studies to develop techniques for stripping tetravalent cerium from tri-n-butyl phosphate solutions. Experiments were conducted in a constant- temperature bath using beakers and mechanical stirring. In 15 minutes at 50 deg c, 95 percent of the cerium was stripped from a 50- pct tri-n-butyl phosphate-50-pct kerosine solution containing 0.18 M cerium, using 0.11 M aqueous formaldehyde.
