Design and Construction of a Radiation Probe.

A thermal radiation probe was constructed and tested in pulverized- coal-fired furnaces. A rotatable sensing head on the side of a water-cooled probe permitted measurement of radiant flux within a 7.2 Deg. Cone from any desired direction to a point within a furnace. A responsive curve for a corner-fired furnace showed radiant flux of 130,000 btu per square foot per hour, when sensing wall reflection. Detailed drawings and fabrication procedures are given.
