Abstract
Lignite can be used as a fuel in boilers that are specifically designed to accommodate the high ash and moisture content. However, for lignite to be an acceptable retrofit fuel for existing boilers that have been designed for oil, natural gas, or higher grade coals, some beneficiation must be done. The work of the Mississippi state University lignite program has concentrated on the beneficiation of low-rank coals for possible retrofit application.
