Dust Control Techniques for Coal Preparation Plants.

This report presents the various dust control techniques being used by coal preparation plants in the United States and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. The following techniques are discussed: ventilation baghouse-type collectors, wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, source control, sprays, personal protection devices, and good housekeeping. Two specific problems in these types of operations are dust collector system duct clogging and control room dust control. Although the information provided specifically deals with coal preparation facilities, it should also be applicable in most cases to powerplants. The information provided in this report resulted from dust control research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at over 25 coal preparation facilities and at numerous mineral processing plants. This research has indicated that plant ventilation systems normally provide the most cost-effective method for dust control. Baghouses and scrubbers were also effective in specific applications, and examples of each are provided. In very high dust concentrations, personal protection devices, such as air helmets and respirators, can be highly cost effective.
