Problems associated with the recovery of minerals from hot geobrines obtained from the Magmamax No. 1 Geothermal Well near Calipartia, California, were studied. After heat and the precipitated salts have been removed, the spent brines are disposed of through injection wells. If dissolved solids are allowed to precipitate uncontrolled and are not removed from spent brines, the solids may plug the injection wells. This report describes an engineering design for a demonstration plant to remove bulk-solid precipitates from geobrine after the heat removal step and prior to injection. A later report presents an alternative design for a demonstration plant that would recover iron, manganese, lead, zinc, and lithium values in addition to removing solids from geobrine prior to injection.
