Evaluation of Die Forging of Ductible Cast Iron.

The report describes tests of the forgeability of ductile cast iron in the 1,700 deg to 1,950 deg range. It was found that while scaling is minimal, ductile iron is less plastic and requires more time and force for a given reduction than does steel forged at the same temperature. Forgeability can be improved by lower silicon content, control of flash dimensions, and the use of cast preforms. Recommendations and conclusions are given concerning the utility of forging selected articles from ductile iron castings. With proper development of procedures, such practice could serve as an overall lower energy means of shaping relative to conventional steelmaking practices in situations in which the particular properties of forged ductile iron are deemed adequate or advantageous.
