The report analyzes technical and economic feasibility of gasification of low-rank solid fuels to provide fuel gas for firing iron ore pelletizing furnaces in northern Minnesota. Comparisons are made of several types of gasifiers, gas characteristics, and economics of large, centrally located gasification plant with gasification facilities at individual pellet plants. Costs of retrofitting to grate-kiln, traveling grate, and shaft type furnaces are compared.
