Abstract
The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at improving the ergonomics aspects of mining equipment design. Three development projects are discussed: maintainability design guidelines for underground mining equipment, underground mobile equipment seating design, and a computerized method to analyze operator compartment design. The overall goal of these projects is to provide manufacturers and mine operators with the tools and techniques to design or properly modify mining equipment so that it meets the needs of its human operators. A brief discussion of each project is presented.
