The serious environmental concerns facing the minerals industry and the nation have prompted recent changes in the Bureau of Mines' research program. A Division of Environmental Technology has been created in the Bureau's research directorate in response to those concerns. This presentation describes the development of mining solid waste regulations and current areas of environmental technology research that are addressing this and other environmental issues.
